Liverpool Smash British Transfer Record To Land Florian Wirtz From Leverkusen

Liverpool have agreed to a sensational £116.5 million deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated midfielder, Florian Wirtz, in what will be a British-record transfer fee.

The eye-watering deal for Florian Wirtz, confirmed by Sky Sports, sees Liverpool commit to an initial £100 million fee, with a further £16.5 million in performance-based add-ons, bringing the total to €137.5 million.

The move eclipses the previous British record signing of Enzo Fernandez by Chelsea, who cost £107 million from Benfica in 2023.

Wirtz, 22, is currently on holiday and will finalise personal terms and undergo a medical next week before being officially unveiled.

The German international turned down interest from top clubs, including Manchester City and Bayern Munich, to fulfil what sources say was a “long-time dream” of playing at Anfield under new Reds manager Arne Slot.

Florian Wirtz becomes Liverpool’s most expensive signing ever, overtaking the £85 million deal for Darwin Núñez and the £75 million paid for Virgil van Dijk.

The playmaker’s arrival is seen as a significant statement of intent by Slot, who won the Premier League in his debut season at the club.

Slot is building a new-look Liverpool side and Wirtz is central to that vision. Known for his creativity, vision, and composure, Wirtz played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic 2023-2024 Bundesliga title win and helped them finish second last season, contributing 10 goals and 12 assists in just 25 league starts.

Wirtz made his senior debut for Leverkusen at 17 and has gone on to register 57 goals in 197 appearances. Since making his international debut in 2021, he has scored 7 goals in 31 matches for Germany and is expected to be a key figure at Euro 2024.
