Atiku, Labour Party Congratulate Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo on Sunday joined voices across the world in mourning the victims of the brutal massacre in Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed during a night attack on Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area.

During his Angelus prayer at St. Peter’s Square, the pontiff expressed deep sorrow over what he described as a “terrible massacre”, offering prayers for the victims and calling for peace, security, and justice in Nigeria.

Pope Leo noted that many of the victims were internally displaced persons (IDPs) who had sought refuge at a local Catholic mission before the attackers struck late Friday night.

Pope said, “I am praying for security, justice, and peace in Nigeria.”

“In a special way, I am thinking of the rural Christian communities of Benue State, who have been relentless victims of violence.”

Naija News had earlier reported that suspected armed herdsmen stormed Yelewata around 10:00 pm, opening fire on sleeping residents and setting homes ablaze. The death toll has been estimated at over 200, with scores injured and many others still unaccounted for.

In response to the attack, angry youths took to the streets on Sunday, staging a massive protest that shut down the Abuja-Makurdi highway.

Dressed in black and carrying palm fronds and placards, the demonstrators blocked traffic and demanded immediate government intervention.
