Top political figures from across Nigeria’s political spectrum converged on the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday for the official unveiling of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the new platform for a mega opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Naija News reports that the event marks a significant political realignment as opposition heavyweights prepare to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the next polls in 2027.

Among those present at the high-stakes gathering were 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi, 2023 LP’s Vice Presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, former Vice President and 2023 candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, ex-APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, FCT senator Ireti Kingibe, and Anambra Central lawmaker, Victor Umeh.

Also in attendance were former Governors Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto), Nasir El-Rufai (Kaduna), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Jibrilla Bindow (Adamawa), and Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), all seen as influential figures within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Coalition

The presence of such a broad coalition signals a serious attempt to mount a united challenge to the APC’s dominance.

David Mark, Aregbesola Lead Opposition Front

As previously reported by Naija News, the coalition has adopted the ADC as its official political vehicle and appointed former Senate President David Mark as Chairman and former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, as Secretary of the movement.

Naija News reports that Mark and Aregbesola, both veterans with strong ties across political divides, are expected to provide strategic leadership for the coalition.

The coalition’s unveiling is coming amid growing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of economic hardship, insecurity, and governance reforms.

Political observers have speculated that the ADC-led opposition alliance could pose a serious threat if it maintains internal cohesion and presents a viable alternative to the electorate.

So far, neither the Presidency nor the APC has officially reacted to the unveiling of the opposition platform.

The coming months are expected to reveal the full scale of the coalition’s strength and whether it can rally Nigerians behind a new political direction.
