Lionel Messi‘s fine form continued on Wednesday night as the Inter Miami captain fired two first-half goals to power his side past the New England Revolution.

Lionel Messi’s brace in the 2-1 win over the New England Revolution has rewritten the Major League Soccer record books.

The 38-year-old icon became the first player in MLS history to score multiple goals in four consecutive league matches, a streak he started in May.

The latest came in front of a packed crowd at Gillette Stadium, where Messi left little doubt about his enduring brilliance.

“Obviously, Leo is a special player,” said Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano after the match. “For me, he’s the best player that has played this sport in history. It’s unbelievable how he continues doing things that maybe many years ago we thought we could never see at this moment.”

Messi opened the scoring in the 27th minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse by the Revolution before drilling a left-footed shot from close range.

Eleven minutes later, he struck again, this time thanks to a signature moment with longtime teammate Sergio Busquets, who threaded a pinpoint pass that Messi curled past goalkeeper Aljaz Ivacic.

“They have played for many years, so just when they see each other, they connect and they know what they think,” Mascherano said. “In the second goal, Busquets understands when and where Leo wants the ball. It’s fantastic for us.”

Though Carles Gil pulled one back for New England in the 79th minute with a thumping effort from outside the box, Miami held firm, thanks in part to a stellar performance from veteran keeper Oscar Ustari, who registered six saves to keep the Revolution at bay.

The win sees Inter Miami leapfrog into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 35 points, now just seven behind leaders FC Cincinnati despite playing three fewer matches, a gap due largely to their recent Club World Cup campaign.

Messi, who netted once in four appearances during the Club World Cup before Miami bowed out to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, now boasts 14 goals in just 15 MLS appearances this season. Only Nashville’s Sam Surridge, with 16 goals in 21 matches, sits ahead of him on the scoring chart.
