Nigeria’s Flying Eagles were left heartbroken after a late goal handed Ivory Coast a 1-0 victory in the final of the 2025 West Africa Football Union (WAFU) U-20 Boys Cup.

The final, which took place at the University of Ghana Stadium in Accra on Wednesday night, July 23, saw two unbeaten teams go head-to-head.

Coach Aliyu Zubairu’s side were looking to retain their regional crown, while the Young Elephants of Ivory Coast were eyeing a perfect campaign.

The game ended in favour of the Ivorians, courtesy of a late lapse that shattered Nigeria’s title hopes.

The match was a cagey affair, defined more by missed chances and resolute defending than attacking flair. While both sides had their moments, clear-cut chances were scarce for the most part.

Nigeria’s shot-stopper, Ebenezer Harcourt, kept his side in the game with a string of vital saves around the hour mark, frustrating the Ivorians during a sustained spell of pressure.

But just when it seemed the tie was headed for penalties, disaster struck for the Nigerians. In the 91st minute, a seemingly routine free-kick was floated into the Nigerian box.

Harcourt, who had been solid all game, spilt the ball under pressure, allowing Zakaria Tindano to pounce and lash home the rebound.

It was a cruel twist for Nigeria and a moment of redemption for Tindano, who notched his third tournament goal and secured the title for the Young Elephants.

The Flying Eagles’ run to the final had been filled with promise and composure, but the final hurdle proved a step too far.

In the third-place match played earlier in the day, hosts Ghana gave the home crowd something to cheer about, defeating Niger 2-0 in a comfortable display.

Aziz Musibau starred for the Black Satellites, converting a 70th-minute penalty before finishing off a brilliant move with an easy tap-in from a Kelvin Nkrumah assist in the 78th minute.
