Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines For Today, Wednesday, 13th August, 2025

Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Saturday, 27th July, 2025.

1. 2027: North Will Prefer Jonathan To Obi – PDP Chieftain

Amid renewed debate over zoning and the possible return of power to the North in 2027, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Umar Sani, has said it would be more strategic for the North to support former President, Goodluck Jonathan than the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking on Daily Politics, a programme on Trust TV, on Saturday, Sani argued that Jonathan’s candidacy would better serve the North’s interests because his constitutional term limit guarantees he can only serve one term.

Sani, who served as media aide to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, said supporting Jonathan would complete the South’s eight-year tenure and pave the way for the North to return to power in 2031.

According to Sani, the North would be more confident in Jonathan’s legal limit than in Obi’s verbal pledge to serve only one term.

2. Tinubu’s Spokesperson Speaks On President’s Health Status

The Special Adviser on Public Communications and Media to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Daniel Bwala, has claimed that the Nigerian leader is “physically fitter than most presidents in advanced countries,” amid renewed scrutiny over his frequent foreign medical trips and early endorsements for the 2027 elections.

Naija News reports that Bwala made the assertion during an interview with DW Africa, where he also defended the wave of endorsements trailing Tinubu’s mid-term in office, describing it as an internal tradition of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“In fact, the president of Nigeria physically is fitter than most presidents in the advanced countries,” Bwala said when asked about concerns regarding Tinubu’s health and his medical travels.

He explained that the early endorsements for Tinubu’s second term were part of the APC’s procedural review at mid-term and not a calculated political stunt.

3. ‘Stop Misleading The North, You Can’t Inherit Buhari’s legacy’ — Umahi Warns Kwankwaso

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has berated former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, over what he described as a “deliberate attempt to mislead Northerners” by falsely claiming that President Bola Tinubu’s development projects favour only the South.

Naija News reports that Umahi dismissed the allegations as “mischievous, misleading, and baseless,” stressing that the President’s infrastructural agenda cuts across all regions.

In a statement personally signed by him in Abuja on Saturday, Umahi accused Kwankwaso of playing divisive politics and attempting to distort the facts regarding federal projects under Tinubu’s administration.

He urged Nigerians, especially in the North, to disregard Kwankwaso’s remarks, describing them as an attempt to sow discord between regions.

Umahi also cautioned Kwankwaso against positioning himself as a successor to the legacy of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, warning that such ambition is both illusory and opportunistic.

4. ADC Reveals Why Sitting Governors Are Not Joining Party Yet

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared its resolve to oust the Bola Tinubu-led administration in the 2027 general elections, insisting that the party’s growing national momentum is unaffected by its lack of serving governors.

Speaking after the National Political Consultative Group (North) meeting in Abuja on Saturday, the ADC’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party remains formidable despite its current political positioning.

Naija News reports that Abdullahi dismissed concerns about the party’s lack of sitting governors, attributing it to alleged threats and intimidation from the federal government.

According to the ADC, discontent with the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government has reached a boiling point, with many Nigerians now actively seeking an alternative.

He said the ADC, backed by several political coalitions, is poised to present the APC with a fierce electoral challenge.

The party also sounded a warning to the ruling APC, stating that any attempt to manipulate the 2027 election would be strongly resisted.

He noted that the ADC is mobilising nationwide to ensure credible and transparent elections.

The meeting of the National Political Consultative Group, which is a bloc within the ADC, commenced with a moment of silence in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on July 13.

Some of those at the meeting included former Senate President and Interim National Chairman of the ADC, Senator David Mark, Malam Kashim Imam, Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, and Salihu Moh. Lukman, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN, former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, Senator Dino Melaye, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, and Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT of ADC, Dr Mani Ibrahim.

5. Lagos Renames Streets After Tinubu, Olamide, 9ice, Bukayo Saka [Full List]

The Bariga Local Council Development Area in Lagos State has renamed some streets after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Naija News reports that the council chairman, Kolade Alabi David, whose tenure ended on Friday announced the development.

He disclosed that the popular ‘Charly Boy’ bus stop has been renamed after award-winning rapper and singer, Olamide Adedeji, popularly known as Badoo.

He also renamed another street after Arsenal winger, Bukayo Saka.

Alabi stated that the move is part of efforts to honour individuals who have brought pride to Bariga and contributed to Nigeria’s global image through their craft and contributions.

Alabi also disclosed that Ilaje Road has been renamed after veteran Juju musician, King Sunny Adé.

6. Kwankwaso Knows What He Is Doing, Indirectly Marketing Tinubu To North – APC Chieftain

A chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayekooto Akindele, has claimed that former presidential candidate of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly promoting President Bola Tinubu’s achievements in the North through calculated criticism.

Akindele made the assertion while reacting to Kwankwaso’s recent statement accusing the Tinubu-led administration of neglecting the northern region in favour of the South.

Naija News reports that the former Kano State governor had on Thursday expressed displeasure, alleging that President Tinubu’s government was concentrating federal resources and developmental projects only in the southern part of the country.

In a swift response, the presidency, through Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Sunday Dare, dismissed Kwankwaso’s allegations.

The presidential spokesman reeled out a list of key infrastructural and policy-driven interventions being executed in the northern region to debunk the claims.

Dare maintained that Tinubu remains a national leader committed to equitable development across all zones of the country.

Reacting further, Akindele insisted that Kwankwaso’s remarks were not accidental. According to him, the NNPP chieftain deliberately provoked the presidency to spotlight Tinubu’s work in the North.

7. 2027: North Adopts ADC As Opposition Front — Babachir Lawal

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has said the National Political Consultative Group (North) has formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Lawal, who also serves as a chieftain of the ADC, disclosed this in Abuja on Saturday during a press briefing at the end of the group’s 3rd Expanded Meeting held at the Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel (formerly Sheraton).

Speaking to journalists, Lawal, who chairs the NPCG (North), stated that the decision was reached after extensive consultations among stakeholders from the 19 northern states.

He said the adoption of the ADC was not just strategic but rooted in the group’s disillusionment with the current state of governance under President Bola Tinubu.

Lawal criticised the Tinubu-led administration for allegedly neglecting the needs and concerns of the northern region.

He said Northern stakeholders agreed to mobilise and spread their message to unite the people and adopt a common position for the next election.

8. FG Denies Raising Age Requirement For JSS1 To 12 Years

The federal government of Nigeria has firmly denied raising the minimum age requirement for entry into Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the country from 10 to 12 years.

The government also noted that the minimum requirement age for entry into universities and other tertiary institutions remains 16 years.

Naija News reports that the clarifications were made in a statement issued on Saturday by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

He blamed the Punch Newspaper for publishing a false and misleading claim that the Federal Government had set a new minimum age of 12 years for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1).

Alausa clarified that the report in question did not originate from any official source and does not reflect the policy of the federal government.

He therefore urged the public to disregard the initial report.
